2023 Tate Herbert Memorial Post-Secondary Volunteer Award

Herman Wong, a student at Osgoode Hall Law School, is the recipient of the 2023 Tate Herbert Memorial Post Secondary Award.

The annual award is named after a young man who lost his life to cancer while studying Law and Society at Wilfrid Laurier University. As with many of the young people OJEN works with, his interest in justice was beginning to transform into a life purpose. The award recognizes a post-secondary student volunteer who has exceeded expectations and made a significant contribution to OJEN’s justice education initiatives.

As a member of the  2022-23 Justice Education Fellowship program. Herman delivered more than double the number of workshops required. His initiative, excellent program delivery and rapport with students made his workshops popular with teachers. As a result. he was often asked to return to deliver additional workshops.

In addition to his work at OJEN, Herman volunteers at the International Refugee Assistance Project through Osgoode. He is also a copy editor for a bi-weekly newspaper for Osgoode Hall Law School.

Herman’s name will appear on the permanent plaque that hangs in the Barrie Courthouse and will be recognized at OJEN’s Annual General Meeting in November.
