2025 Susan Kasurak
Susan Kasurak, a teacher at Western Technical-Commercial School in the Toronto District School Board, was presented with the 2025 Hux-Kiteley Exemplary Justice Educator Award on August 27.
Her nominators referred to the popularity of her grade 11 and 12 law courses and the extra-curricular student-led clubs she supports, such as the Mock Trial Club and the Equity Club. She has forged meaningful partnerships with local legal professionals, community organizations, and fellow educators to enrich the learning experience of the students. As one nominator observed, her success results from her “dynamic, inquiry-based learning modules that engage students in real-world legal issues, from mock trials to community-based justice projects”.

The mock trials she runs in both her grade 11 and 12 classes involve every student in the class. Not only are her own students immersed in the case, but students who are not taking the course come to watch. This year, she led the Mock Trial club to victory, garnering first place at the extremely competitive Toronto OOCMT tournament.
Outside the classroom, Susan has mentored both colleagues and student teachers, led professional development workshops, and contributed to curriculum development at the board level. Her influence extends beyond the classroom, shaping how justice education is understood and implemented across our school district.
The true test of a teacher’s skill is evident by the impact they have on their students. Susan’s students spoke of how she encouraged them to do their best, challenged their self-perception, and built their self-confidence.
Susan was presented with a print created by a student from Heritage Glen Public School in Oakville as part of OJEN’s Grade 5 Poster Challenge. This is the 15th year the award has been presented.
