This summer, I had the amazing chance to intern at the Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN) through the Law in Action Within Schools (LAWS) program at Downsview Secondary School. The LAWS program really helped me feel confident in applying for this placement, allowing me to connect directly with the legal community and learn more about the justice system.
During my time at OJEN, I picked up a lot of useful skills. I learned how to organize documents, scan files, and manage data entry. I also got better at using Gmail, which helped me communicate more effectively with my coworkers. One of my main projects was working on refreshing the organization’s website, which was both challenging and rewarding. I also participated in a YouTube research project and helped create gift bags for an upcoming event, highlighting the variety of tasks I tackled.
Out of all my responsibilities, I really enjoyed the data entry work. It might seem simple, but I liked how straightforward it was. I could concentrate on my tasks and see the results of my efforts, which showed me how important it is to keep accurate records.
I believe that justice education is essential for young people today. Knowing their rights and understanding the legal processes that impact their lives empowers them to handle challenges more effectively. It encourages them to be responsible and engaged citizens. The work OJEN does to educate youth about these issues is incredibly important because it helps break down barriers and fosters a more informed community.
Overall, my experience at OJEN was eye-opening and inspiring. I was pleasantly surprised by the friendly atmosphere and teamwork within the organization. It was great to see how dedicated everyone was to promoting justice education and making the legal system more accessible. I am thankful for this opportunity and look forward to using the skills and knowledge I gained during my internship in my future endeavors.
