Legal Studies, Social Change essay contest winners 2024-2025

Contest participants answered the question: What role is there for law reform in creating positive social change? Thank you to all the students who participated. The judges were impressed by the quality and thoughtfulness of the essays submitted! The contest winners are:

First place:

Zainab from Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy, Pickering

Reforming Canadian Law to Protect Victims of Intimate Partner Violence

$500 and $2,000 Ontario Tech entrance scholarship

 

Second place:

Jal from Thorold Secondary School, Thorold

Decriminalization of Personal Use: Is it the Solution to the Drug Crisis?

$300 and $1,500 Ontario Tech entrance scholarship

 

Third place:

Marwa from Grand River Collegiate Institute, Kitchener

The Tug-of-War Effect: Law Reform on Society and Québec’s Bill 21

$200 and $1,000 Ontario Tech entrance scholarship

 

All students who submitted essays and their teachers were invited to attend the Law and Society: Age of Connection and Distraction Conference at Ontario Tech University on Friday, February 21. As well as sitting in on conference sessions, they had an opportunity to take part in a roundtable discussion with OJEN’s Jean Paul Bevilacqua and professors and students in the Legal Studies program at Ontario Tech University. They discussed their essay topics, research ideas, and hopes for their future. 

Thank you to Dr. Thomas McMorrow, Associate Professor and Undergraduate Program Director of Legal Studies in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities at Ontario Tech University for this exciting opportunity for students.
