Futures in Justice Workshop at Toronto Metropolitan University
The ‘Futures in Justice’ workshop is an OJEN career modelling program to assist young women facing systemic barriers to “see themselves in law” by introducing them to legal professionals with whom they may share similar backgrounds or experiences. For some female students, a career in law may feel out of their reach for a number of reasons (e.g., financial, overwhelming application process, under-representation, few if any legal mentors or networks). This workshop is for female students who are interested in exploring a career in justice but feel unsure about how to move forward in establishing a career path in law. The workshop is also open to non-binary and gender fluid students.
The goal of this program is to show that there is a place for everyone in the legal profession regardless of background. In the one-day workshop a variety of legal professionals are featured with an emphasis on different careers in justice and the non-linear pathways to achieve a career in law. TMU has been selected because the profile of students reflects the multi-cultural character of the City of Toronto. It is hoped TMU’s “Futures in Justice’ workshop will advance equity and inclusion of female students who are facing barriers to the legal field.
