Mooting – Waterloo Region

The OJEN Waterloo committee is looking to gauge and develop interest in mooting for high school students.

In a moot, teams of students argue an appeal case before judges, taking the positions of appellant and respondent.

Typically, the case is a recent Supreme Court decision with a strong dissent.

While mock trials simulate the trial level of court proceedings and focus mostly on dealing with evidence, facts, and witnesses, moots simulate the appeal stage and focus more on points of law.

We are considering organizing a mooting competition in the fall of 2019. This school year, we want to hear from teachers who would like help from lawyers to run moots in their classroom or as an extra-curricular, and/or who might be interested in participating in a future mooting competition next year.

Interested teachers should email us at waterlooregionojen@gmail.com.
