OJEN is teaming up with Toronto Community Housing (TCH)’s Midnight Basketball program.
Launched in 2013, this unique program provides a positive space for youth (aged 14-18) to develop their skills both on and off the court. It offers participants opportunities for both physical and personal development and connects them to educational and employment opportunities. More than a sports program, Midnight Basketball equips participants with leadership and life skills through workshops on financial literacy, decision-making, conflict resolution and more.
Beginning in November, youth from 6 neighbourhoods in Toronto’s east region will come together to learn, play basketball, and foster inter-community connections.
OJEN is excited to collaborate with our long-time partner, Toronto Community Housing, to bring justice education to the Midnight Basketball program. Funded by the Department of Justice Canada’s Justice Partnership and Innovation Program, OJEN’s initiative delivers culturally relevant public legal education programs for youth in Ontario. It addresses some of the common legal needs of African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) youth and Indigenous youth.
OJEN will deliver workshop sessions to Midnight Basketball participants. Youth will learn how to address discrimination and harassment in real-life situations. Using scenarios, videos and game-based learning, they will learn about their rights under Ontario’s Human Rights Code.
Over the course of the program youth will:
- Learn how to navigate various human rights issues
- Practice the legal life skills needed to address law-related challenges; and
- Develop connections with justice sector professionals to build respect, empathy, and understanding.
The program culminates in an interactive roundtable discussion where youth participants share feedback about the program and provide recommendations for future programs.
The Midnight Basketball League is delivered in partnership with the Toronto Raptors, funded by MLSE Foundation with program space donated by the University of Toronto. OJEN is delighted to be part of this winning team.
