Not a Puppet on a String: Prosecuting a Former Child Soldier for War Crimes

As a young child, Dominic Ongwen was abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a rebel militia operating in Uganda, South Sudan, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His parents were killed and he was forced to serve as a child soldier in the group. Ongwen rose among the ranks of the LRA to become a prominent member of its leadership and, connected to LRA violence, was charged by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity including murder, rape, enslavement and torture.

In February 2021, the ICC convicted Mr. Ongwen of these crimes. Our speaker, Dr. Ayodele Akenroye, assisted the prosecution as a visiting professional during the trial. We are thrilled to have him join us to speak about this case and about the issues raised by the prosecution of former child soldiers.
